1. Following the Bollywood magazine
conventions I believe my magazine has overall followed the conventions of a
Bollywood magazine. Firstly my front cover matches with the codes and
conventions for e.g. from my case studies of the first magazine that I
analyzed as you can see the front cover
is mainly covered with the female artist only
and there only few sell lines/teasers.
And underneath is the masthead; on the whole the magazine captures
audience attention because first it’s a famous notable artist and the way the
magazine is layout is: there are few teasers and the use of anchorage (the
title) is short, catchy and effective at the same time. The skyline
‘collector’s issue” is goes over the top of her head suggesting that it’s much
more important than her. Therefore the whole magazine purpose is on the
masthead since its front of the artist as it’s big, bold and upper case letters
are used to make stand out. The strap line is under the anchorage text (title)
again it’s encouraging and the use of space out makes it more visible for the
audience to see it especially when the text colour is white. IN MY FRONT
COVER I’ve used some conventions and
codes those set out by professional magazine but I’ve also subverted as well as
developed conventions in constructing the
layout of my front cover and I have maintained this in my contents page
and the double page spread. My front cover follows the idea that no matter how
important the artist is in the front cover the masthead will be always more
important because to me if it’s only about the model then there are thousands
magazine out there who have also beautiful/handsome model on their cover and
thus what makes my magazine unique is that the masthead is the main essential
and it’s not only about the artist but other stories too (cover lines). One way
my front cover follows the conventions of a magazine is through the use of
masthead : when researching and doing my case studies I’ve noticed that the
masthead is always large, bold, catchy title and quite short, plus from the magazine newsstand distribution task , it was
mentioned that no matter which or what popular artist you put in your front
cover there’s no guarantee that an audience will defiantly buy it, the
anchorage and the masthead are also the huge component for a successful cover.
Therefore remembering this tip I
considered that as well as having an attractive model in my cover my anchorage
text must be effective and the masthead should be distinctive ( the model and the masthead should be the Centre of
attraction; the masthead should appear first so that the audience knows what the
genre the magazine is about). So therefore
the element that I have reinforced from my case studies and the essentials element
of a professional magazine is the model. Without a compelling image it
wouldn’t draw a potential customer’s interest to my magazine while sitting in a
midst of thousands of others at a shop. In order to make the image of the model
powerful but simple, I’ve used a grey background which is neutral and appeals
to both gender but at the same time I wanted the layout to be effective and
professional because I wanted each elements to be stand out e.g. the title is
clearly visible, bold, bright, formal use of font which shows the magazine is dominant
along with the reader is drawn to the striking central image with the bright
pink and black anchorage text. The colour theme is also simplistic with having
grey and white implying a formality and mature approach as in target audience. This
links back to my case studies ideas and the ways my magazine has used and
developed forms and convention of music magazine because like all the music
magazine I believe that my artist image is strong influential image as a front
cover artist because when photographing I made sure that I use simple plain backdrop
to make artist plus the anchorage text to pop up to the audience eye by itself.
Alternatively when looking at a British music magazine you will see in majority
of the magazine the masthead is behind the artist (some magazines like NME or Q
are always at the front to show the magazine is successful and dominant in
terms of the issue of the magazine. But in British Bollywood magazines sometime
they either put the artist behind the masthead or the masthead front of the
artist this is because the issues depends how famous or attractive it is about
the artist e. g If it’s a hot spicy
issue then the masthead will be on the back of the model. As a result I choose to have the masthead front of the artist
because I didn’t want the artist to look like the main cover star as if it’s
only about her because the anchorage text is different (the issue is different)
and in keeping the fact my target audience is also on professional people and
qualified people even though it’s aimed at young audience. I wanted to give the teasers in the
magazine space out to stand out clearly for the audience to notice and more
organized since I’ve used formal fonts. On most of the music magazine target
audience profile younger audiences are the Centre attention thus they have
model with whom they can identify in the front cover. In my magazine I’ve also
tried to maintain the interest of young audience ( since its mainly on female
audience) but at the same time showing that it’s also aimed at a formal and
older audience from 16+ as you can see it in the cover lines. Therefore the
masthead is subverted as its front of the artist and the teasers are space out
and bold so they can easily be seen. But at the same time the artist is in the Centre
of the cover meaning she’s the important curiosity in the cover. The detonation
of the whole magazine that I wanted to create in the magazine is that to
emphasize that it’s a Bollywood music magazine and usually in any Bollywood
magazine they never have all the teasers being stick to it in one place, and
they have only few teasers in the cover. So another way I’ve also develop the idea that all the cover lines should be next to
each other. I have given more space and made it noticeable to see along
with the main anchorage text. When creating my magazine one thing I wanted to depict
is the uniqueness and brightness of Bollywood music magazine that it’s more diverse
and exceptional in its own way. It does follow the codes & convention of a
magazine but also develops and challenges forms of conventions in a magazine. The
detonation of my front cover is about a new young star who’s made it top of the
Bollywood music industry but at the same time she had some issues
In my contents
page I have tried
to maintain the codes and conventions of a real music magazine. I have used
double page but however I didn’t use any other images except my model images.
Usually in a contents page there’s more than one different artist picture
but In first side I used the mainly the
model within in a grey backdrop with
pink subheadings to balance out the feminism idea that it’s only a female
target audience it’s also aimed at males audience . By mixing pink and black
fonts in the grey background balances out the feministic since it can appeal to
masculine too. In the feature section I’ve outlined the lead articles as you
can see the lead articles are brief, snappy and there is a short explanatory
giving the reader more choice whether to read or not this is because the text
being justified is one of the common conventions of magazines. The most
striking difference in my contents page is that it’s only the same model
pictures being shown more than once not to show that the general focus should
only be on her but I wanted to accentuate the fact in this content page there
is more than another issues to read and it gives the audience more easy choice;
it almost lures the audience to read about it more as there’s isn’t anything
particular highlighted to read “especially/must”. Rather than having images with number I
decided to have numbers separately in a square box. As my magazine colours were
based pink and black, using these two colours again would give a feeling of
elegance, formal, sophistication, bold, confident and create a classy mood
especially as it’s for qualified and professional middle class as in social
group audience. Therefore I believe my contents page gives those feelings and
moods that I wanted to reflect on it. Furthermore in terms of house style the
contents page keeps to the usual codes and convention as it uses the same
colours as the rest of the magazine but alternatively I haven’t use similar
fonts since to keep the feministic sentiment
however not to over emphasize that it’s only targeted into female
audience. Using black and pink fonts forms a sense of mysterious in the content
page evoking excitement that what’s so special about the issues/cover lines. So therefore another way my magazine
developed and challenged the convention that all magazines font styles is
different when it comes to contents page typography because in my last case
studies inside the contents page there was no image it was structured and
outlined together without no space to make sure that not only it grabs audience
attention but to keep them lured into it as if they have to read the whole
contents to see which one they should read about. As a result since my target audience mainly
starts from 16 + and young adult onwards I have to consider that the layout of
the magazine should not perplex the audience as I’m trying to maintain the
modernity and formal look instead give them give option to choose what to read.
While the magazine audience is mature and young adult the magazine should not
contain issues/cover lines that’s seen as not necessary to read. And plus it
had no title saying content page instead it gives the audience to look more
which is interesting because it gives a
fresh new look of the magazine to read about it. So overall I have tried to reinforce,
develop but tried to subvert the codes and convention because I wanted to
demonstrate my uniqueness in my contents page for e. g. I have placed the title
contents page at the top of the page so it’s easily to access for the
readership to see and the word BOLLY Rhythm shorten as BR appears first before
the contents name, this illustrates the importance the magazine has especially
in Bollywood plus it’s only about Bollywood music.
Double page spread: The first magazine that I have
analyzed is a Bollywood music magazine aimed at female audience. In this
magazine “Filmfare” the double page spread only used white backdrop and placed
the images of the artist. It used pull quotes, there was no particular effects
that makes it look bright and vibrant. But the magazine did it in a simple
effectual way as along with the texts the images are also given more attention
to read. The image almost empathize the story in the page. Furthermore, there’s
a big capital letter A (drop capital) at
the start of the first paragraph and then in the next page there’s a big
capital letter W after the 3rd paragraph. In both of the pages
there’s more text than images and that’s to keep the audience hook so they
don’t turn the page without finishing the reading. Surprisingly there’s so
masthead at the start to tell what’s it’s about; this idea sharply grabs
audience curiosity to know more about the story plus since it’s a beautiful
famous actress it amplifies the
curiosity of a reader specially if it’s
about her achievement. With the image
there’s background information on what’s the image is about, it straight tells
the audience where and how the images links with the text. At the front of the
page since there’s no masthead to introduce the topic, the images almost
introduce what it is going to be about as we can see her old images being
shown. The research from this magazine
,has challenged and developed the codes and conventions in different and
similar ways as in order to keep the interest of female audience the magazine
has to give or introduce or change the convention in order to make it look
interesting but most importantly to make sure the audience doesn’t buys
another magazine. In contrast the double page spread in my magazine similarly follows
the conventions set from my case study magazine for e. g In the double page spread you can see two pull
quotes but however in order to hook and
sustain audience interest I made it shorter
and also I wrote in pink and black , the use of pick and black for the
pull quotes shows the artist strength and symbolism for her femininity as the
story mainly talks about how she doesn’t spent her time worrying what people
say about her, which again shows her mentally strong . Additionally, I’ve used
a different font because to show as if she wrote it by herself and creates a
different meaning to read it as if it’s from a diary of someone, this font
keeps the page more neat and tidy which gives the pull quotes more to stand
out. Therefore I have reinforced the element pull quotes as it gives an audience
an inside of the artist world life and what they think etc. As well as I have noticed that most music
magazines have something different splash in the front for the real story and
then in the double page spread they have another masthead/ title/ splash, this
is because it tells the next part of the headline and thus in my magazine the
headline in bright bold formal modern pink and black colour gives the audience
an insight as to what the interview is going to be about. The use of image
shows the type of genre , this is can be seen by the costume of my role model,
I have only used two images but also in the other page rather than having the
image taking over the whole space I have edited downwards because in the story
the model wants to portray that she doesn’t want Bollywood music industry to
dominate her life and her choice of music , hence putting the image down in the
right side makes it more easier to read the text; this links with the idea that
the model also wants to free herself and give herself more time rather than
carrying on only with music in her life.
There’s a big drop capital letter “I” in the title to surprise the audience
about her and since it’s really bold, formal, big it symbolizes her identity as
in the front cover the artist name is already given “you think you know Fahmi
think again”. The drop letter “I” link with the image as it shows the
seriousness in her face which clarifies what she wants to say. I haven’t spread
out the headlines in the double page because this is where I wanted to
challenge the codes and convention as when an interview takes up a double page,
they allow the title to bleed onto the other page in order to show the reader
the pages are linked; I haven’t followed this element because I wanted to imply
something varied rather than having spread it out not because of the amount of
texts but to emphasize that it’s a Bollywood music magazine and Bollywood music
magazine can challenge and develop its
own codes and conventions ( but same as British music magazine ) and that is
what my magazine is about , If I follow the same conventions there’s not going
to be not much profit for me as a publisher because there are thousand music
magazine out there and to make my magazine stand out I have outperform some of
the codes and conventions . Nevertheless magazines also tend to use a striking
image of the singer to catch the audience attention or they will place more
than one icon in a different place or in different pose in a different way.
This is because the types of pictures being used are a metaphor about how the
artist is and how she is in real life linking with the text. As a result I have
also tried to use a striking image and that is created within the costume dress
pink with pink scarf, the effect been created through these icons is that it
holds the audience attention especially it’s a bright colour highlighting she’s
an Bollywood singer. The use of costume of the artist pink represents her
confidence as a young female singer, the respect that she deserves and
preserves, her assurance as being both British and Bollywood female singer, her
maturity at such young age even though some people see her negative way( what
people think about her ). Plus the colour pink shows how her relaxation and how
happy and mentally strong she is even though ignoring what people say about
her, it almost reveals her tension that she lets go as you can see a smiley
happy face in a chair, meaning that at the end her choice reflects who she is,
as the artist is a young British singer and a Bollywood singer the pink
represents her passion for her music because of the colour brightness, youthful
and sensations. The atmosphere that is created in this double page is about how
she deals with people without being aggressive and how she deals with calmly.
So therefore I have reinforced the element that a double page cover story
should almost explore about the artist lifestyles along with telling the story,
it should more reflect on them.
Yet, however I haven’t used the stand first where underneath the
headlines there’s a short explanation to tell the article summarization. Using
this convention I believe almost blocks the
space to read, it chunks up everything in one space, which I didn’t want to as
the long story I haven’t highlighted the questions but I left it so the audience would want to know more if they read
what’s it already going to be about. Besides I haven’t change the style of
writing frequently thought out the text, the text has only few little
questions, the page numbers aren’t in the bottom corner of the page because I
have wrote the page number on the contents page, and to keep my audience hooked
into it I infer that it would be better to have the main cover story only in
the contents page. Lastly the whole house style has used pink and black that is
initially to match with the artist, it links with the title, the use of big
bold black font for the title symbolizes that she’s British Asian singer and
the pink shows her Bollywood side. The combination of these two colors characterizes
her feeling of strength (her music talent) and shows her seeking appreciation
as she tells us in the story. So overall I have followed some codes and
conventions but I have also developed and challenged some codes such the page
numbers and so on, although I have reinforced the element of quotes/pull quotes
in the magazine.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
As my
magazine falls on the genre of Bollywood music magazine I have aimed to create
a social group for my target audience. When developing my magazine my purpose
was to create the magazine aimed at Asian ethnicity as its Bollywood only. The social group that I wanted to denote is
professional and qualified people/women and it’s mainly directed on them.
However the age range starts from 16+ onwards this is because from my extra
audience research the conclusion that I have found is that majority of Asian
young girls and teenagers love Bollywood especially about the music that come
from within the Bollywood movie. My target audience is defined in terms of occupation, age, gender and ethnicity.
Furthermore in mainstream Bollywood magazine females are depicted in a sexual
or undignified way. Hence as my magazine is mainly aimed at professional and
qualified women as it’s a female music magazine, I infer it would be better to
have better and respectable representation of women for instance IN MY FRONT
COVER you can see a young talented restless
girl who’s ambitious is to become a better singer not to become a famous
singer, the whole idea for her to be in
this cover is that it shows the seriousness ,struggle ,fame ,hard work ,passion
and love of a singer towards their Bollywood music career. This BOLLY R
magazine talks about how the modern music starts are dealing with their life
what issues they have faced and what are their future just like all these
issues are discussed in a MOVIE magazine. This magazine signifies the
importance of the Bollywood female and male singers, without their beautiful
tune voice a Bollywood movies are imperfect. This magazine reflects the life of
normal musicians but it talks more than about their life, it has more elements
of Bollywood music rather than the artist. The BOLLY R magazine is linked with big
start IMA award and the Global Indian Music Academy Awards (is the
global recognition platform dedicated ... and musicians in India, also known as
The Chevrolet Star GIMA Awards. famous noble award). These two are the current
famous awards for Bollywood musicians. BOLLY R magazine gives the audience the
chance to vote for their favourite artists and if their artist is chosen for
that award they get a personal letter from that artist. The BOLLY R magazine
offers more than about an artist, even if it’s aimed at females audience it can
also be for males too as many males have their chosen male artist too. My
magazine represents modern musicians and the uniqueness that’s created within
the Bollywood music. The messages and values that are attached to the
representation of my magazine is that I challenged the idea that all females
star should be shown in a way that attracts both gender but however not every
star does Bollywood movies everyone has their own famousness and distinctive,
and thus in my magazine the exceptionality of my model is that she’s a young
Muslim British artist but at the same a Bollywood singer as well. She a young
girl who’s fighting with the stereotype that Muslim people aren’t seen in music
industry as they never was. The reason why I have implied her in that certain
way is to show that not everything is everything has its meaning and
differentness. My front cover implies her in the simplistic and effective way,
this representation of her I believe is a positive outcome of new fresh comer’s
musicians. It gives the reader a role model who they can look up to especially
for young British Muslim or any Asian. Most importantly my magazine challenges
the stereotype the idea that a magazine also have the element of entertainment;
yes my magazine also has the element of entertainment but its magazine that aims
to create aspiration, hope, success , entertainment of the world of BOLLY
music, love , celebration etc. for the audience at the end of the day. This
magazine portrays everyone in the same way with the same respect. It’s fresh,
new, modern view about the old life of Bollywood music, its magazine of
mysterious music magazine where the more you read the more you want to find out
about Bollywood Music. The representation of my readers are positive as it’s
also signifies for eligible, proficient and educated people. In terms of stereotype I have challenged the
view that anyone can be a musician and they don’t have to be famous to make
their music famous, a singer can be famous but it doesn’t mean that your music
will also be good and better as you are, therefore that’s what my model conveys
that even though she’s young she doesn’t need the public to admire her but to
listen to her music .The reason it’s aimed at professional and qualified people
is because from my audience research Bollywood music magazine is escapism,
entertainment, hopeful magazine where you can enjoy and learn that applies to
you real life issues and problems, it’s almost a leisure hobby for these
readership from their world of work but however it also a magazine that also
follows the modern trend in more diverse way and sticks with its formalness for
e.g. in my double page I’ve tried to maintain the elegance, formal, dramatic and sophistication
feeling in the cover and that’s is through the use of language I used which is
in formal tone . The
magazine has its audience review which you can see form the contents page
review section: this is where the audience can write their feedback about our
magazine and what they think we should include more or add. To describe my
target audience I would say “young,
affluent, educated and diverse” and one of my respondent described my
magazine “it’s for someone who wants to feel young again, feel the Bollywood
music thrill in their life which they all used to experience before their
marriage”. BOLLY R magazine is a magazine of high brand value and integrity.
BOLLY R is the destination for the world’s most popular BOLLYWOOD MUSIC
industry: music
charts, news, videos, reviews, events + more, bold stories, big interviews, and astute commentary. They are all conveyed
with energy, passion, irreverence and a point of view that defines its audience.
BOLLY R is the magazine
that brings music alive. It draws together the biggest Bollywood stars, the
most exhilarating phenomena.

What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
The media distribution that will distribute and
publish my magazine is the world most famous magazine distributer and
successful Is Conde Nast. Conde nest is considered to be the originator of the
“class publication,” a type of magazine. Its
magazines focus on a wide range of subjects, including travel, food, home,
culture, and other interests, with fashion. The company brand identity is as you can see is its
specialty on class and they don’t have a mainstream audience. This company has
one of the highest publication and successful magazines and therefore I believe
that the uniqueness of my magazine matches the convention of the organization.
My magazine offers an exclusive different Bollywood music, it’s the destination
for the world’s most popular Bollywood music chart, reviews, events etc. It’s a
first British music magazine covering both Brit Asian and Bollywood singers.
The branding of my magazine is that “it’s a magazine that offers an inside of
the Bollywood world of music, BOLLYWOOD music brings a rhythm and sensation
towards your music magazine, and it’s a magazine where the taste of music can
make you feel young and vibrant. It’s a magazine aimed at middle class and high
class but particularly aimed at qualified and professional people who want to
re- experience they atmosphere of Bollywood music. Bollywood music can be for anyone,
its new aspirational different genre of music and the more you read it they
more addicted you get to read the next issue”. This can be evident from my
audience research as the audience they are from higher class and middle class,
I have halved it equally so it doesn’t create any issues in my research. As a
result the branding of my magazine links to the organization of Conde Nast
because it follows the idea of class identity since my magazine is aimed at
higher and middle class. And the magazines from their company has their age
range start from young audience. Even though Conde Nast is an originator of
lifestyle magazine and only focuses on particular class, I believe it’s not
about the target audience that makes your magazine buy more but about the
contents and the issues it has because magazines like vogue and GQ offer more
than lifestyle. Similarly my magazine offers more than music but it stays
within the genre of music, it includes the topics that are excited and unique
especially in terms of class audience contents. It is different from their
existing magazine this is because all their magazine focuses on niche ideas/
topics like GQ. Hence my magazines doesn’t only focuses on niche ideas but at
the same time gives out something different to read about as it’s a Bollywood
music magazine. My magazine stand for its uniqueness, creativity for its news,
sensational music and lastly for the diverse that it brings; even though the
audience is on Asian people it can also be white people who want to experience
the world of music more and different genre of music. Bollywood music is a
fascinating music genre that hooks people more and more as they read along. And
in Conde Nast all these is what makes their magazine stand out from the other
magazines in the market. Conde Nast magazine has always something exceptional
and proposes an exceptional wide range of subjects. BOLLY R also particularly
proposes the same idea and that is BOLLYWOOD MUSIC MAGAZINE not only talks
about music but the whole entertaining world of BOLLYWOOD music. My magazine
therefore gives them the chance to increase their company uniqueness and it
stands out than the other magazines because it’s a first Bollywood music
magazine. I infer my magazine will bring the sensation that are bring by their
magazine. And it could lead to a successful in the market if the company sees
the magazine in a positive way. CONDE Nast magazines are about creativity and
uniqueness and that’s where my magazine follows introducing its creativity of
music within the world of Bollywood music and the exclusivity in its Bollywood
music, it will create more diverse with the audience bringing every Indian
culture together. Overall my magazine is strong in creating identity for
itself. The brand and identity of BOLLY R should be widely known in UK as
that’s what I’m expecting from the company and when it’s more successful in the
market I want also in America and other countries for further achievement of
the magazine. I believe the use of intriguing images, font styles, bright
colours and stylish layout helps to make the magazine visually stimulating and
captivating to read ; this is can be evidence from the audience research for my
final magazine outlook. As that will give BOLLY R its reputation for being the
best Bollywood music magazine since it’s one of the most significant element
for successful magazine.
One of my
respondent has said “I found the writing style very influential; the main
article is similar to documentary especially with quotes. It’s so colorful that
you can almost understand the feelings of the model- they detail every piece of
information even if it’s not that much texts. To make it more informative for
the reader. But at the end it combines fun and interesting commentary for the
purpose of making it more suitable for the different age audience”.

Who would be the audience for your media
product?
The
audience for my magazine mainly is from 16+ onwards aiming at high class to
middle class only. I would like my magazine to appeal to the ABC demographics
due to the quality of my magazine as it will be monthly. As it’s a Bollywood
music magazine, it is stated that this genre is more popular with females than
males. For instance in here you can see what do I wanted to illustrate through
ABC audience.
Demographics
are key to the creation of a magazine. This system allows journalists and
editors to create a specific target audience within that demographic.
Demographics arrange people into six categories or classes. It is said that
everybody fits into this Social Class system (above), which ideally places
people based on their occupation and wealth. This is also key to the creation
of the magazine as it allows the editors to choose the price and quality of the
magazine based on the class they have chosen. For example: Vogue won’t be aimed
towards people of a lower class as it is expensive at £4.10 and the quality of
the magazine proves this. My magazine is actually for those who truly enjoy music
magazine and Bollywood especially, if you are a lover of music and different
kinds of music entertain you then BOLLY R is your magazine (this is for
non-Asian people who might consider to buy) Keep up to date with all the
happenings in the world of music. With top class photographs, reviews,
interviews and features, every issue of the magazine is a treat for music
lovers. It’s also for 30 age range people because my magazine is also more of a
generation since it represents older generation by displaying older famous
Indian artist. But at the same time targeted for those who are interested in
Bollywood music or into the world of Bollywood, plus the iconic music that was
around. The general ideology of my magazine revolves around respect for the
history of BOLLYWOOD music and features iconic artist.
THE MISSION OF BOLLY Rhythm
BOLLY
R is an educator, a living archive and a trusted source of musical excellence, providing
its audience with an authentic, independent, and emotional connection to the
music. BOLLY R is loved by its readers, the music industry, and by musicians
alike, because it engages them on the subject they love the most
THE BOLLY READER
NINA is 27, a passionate and discerning music
fan, long-time musician himself and dedicated record collector. With her high
disposable income, she loves nothing more than sneaking off to the local
independent record store to see what’s in. A heavy gig goer, she also likes
festival experience, having begun to outgrow Birmingham festive. NINA and her
partner occasionally like to unwind at the weekend by packing the toddlers off
to their grandparents and inviting their friends around for dinner, party and a
rifle through her record collection to unearth some hidden gems. Well-read and
media-savvy, they chat into the small hours about music, books and films.
Readers of BOLLY R magazine are completely gripped with BOLLYWOOD music
therefore the Magazine sells well among students as they are associated typically associated with loving
music and partying. Also, this fits well as the median age of an NME reader is
30 years old. This means the magazine is popular with the younger generation.
They
love technology in general (mobiles, watching films) which is helpful as
younger readers are often influenced by factors such as social networking sites
and peers. This is evident as readers typically want to impress their
friends/peers and often buy magazines such as this to fit with the trend, which
is shown at the top of the media pack with brands such as H&M, Topman and Mark
spencer being associated with the magazine.
Malika is 20rs old and lives in Leeds. She is a
passionate music fan, as a girl she got into ‘proper music’ in the olden
classic bolly music. She’s in full-time employment but reveling in life without
any dependents or family responsibilities. Malika has high disposable income to
spend on himself alone, being a heavy consumer of music, buying up to 6 albums
per month. She loves reading BOLLY R to discover new music, as well as filling
in the gaps in her back catalogue. Mark is highly savvy to digital technology,
a keen social networker and uses online Services to enhance his social life. She’ll
regularly welcome her mates round for a warm-up big night out. An open-minded
experience seeker, Malika loves the live music experience, opting to go for a
mixture of gigs, especially huge arena shows. Though a hugely passionate music
fan, this is not to the detriment of his other interests – film, gaming,
shopping, fashion, TV and comedy.
As
you can see the age range starts from 16 to 30 but it continues as for many
music is always the same no matter what your age is. The location will be on
mainly in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Tower
hamlet, Newham, Oldham, Luton, Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham, Hackney,
Enfield, Bradford, Westminster, Leicester, Harrow, Hounslow, Wolverhampston,
Preston, Sandwell, Slough, Rouchdale, Nottingham, Cambridge, and Bristol. These
are the main locations that I want to supply in. The social class is higher and
middle class. The ethnicities are Bengalis, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans
(South Africans), white people (40 % I would expect as some people taste for
music genre change every 10 yrs.). In terms of How do I know is because from my extra audience research, my feedback for
my ideal magazine and my final magazine commentary illustrates that it’s
mainly on British Asians and Africa’s because first of all Bollywood music
birth is in India and many south Africa n people understand the life of
Bollywood as in the past many black people either moved from India and lived in
there for a few years. This can be evident as I interviewed some of black
friends and many of them watch and Listen to Bollywood music and movies. The
audience feedback from my extra research have proposed that they would like to
read a Bollywood music magazine because there’s always a movie magazine but not
a music magazine in fact rather than the movie the music’s are what really
catches people attention for a good movie since majority believe if the music
is a good quality product then the movie should also be worth watching because
with good musicians are with good directors. Without the positive feedback from
my audience I wouldn’t have started the magazine this is because I thought that
no one would be interested to buy Bollywood music magazine. Surprisingly I got
an opposite feedback implying it would be a mazing if there was also a
Bollywood music magazine. With my first audience study I forwarded my idea and
planned to make a music magazine. I didn’t want to make a hip pop, R&B or
pop magazine; I want to stand out as in my uniqueness and I wanted to apply my
creativity because I always wanted to make Bollywood music magazine since young
girls and myself love reading about
Bollywood music , there will be always about the actress or actor stories but
no one wants to hear about the musicians work, they issues, their life, with
all these It motivated me to make a Bollywood magazine as Bollywood music has
its own identity than the whole Bollywood movies etc. Moreover the 2nd
investigation was on showing the audience the ideal/plan of my magazine: 10
girls and 10 boys were my participants randomly but they all were Asians but
some were black. To conclude the audience overall liked my magazine idea and
the overall house style of it. They said it would look creative but half of
them suggested me to use bright colours that connote feminism but also a modern
colour for both gender. Therefore I decided to use pink and black because pink
and black make a great combination symbolizing BOLLY R. lastly my final
commentary which you can see in my blog is really positive and good comments
demonstrating that my magazine follows the codes and convention of a real
magazine and it does represent that it’s for British people except the some of
the headings in my content page are bit cluttered to read; this is small issue
but as a contents page it’s been given positive feedback and less negatives. I
can’t have everything perfect because it takes time to understand audience view
and to match the magazine with the audience view. One of the feedback is from
my peer who said she would like to buy my magazine even though her taste is in
pop magazine because of the creativity of my magazine and its genre.
1.
How did you attract/address your audience?
Again
refer to specific feedback
gained. Which specific elements attract or address your audience?
For example do elements of mise-en-scene reflect the audience? Or are your
models aspirational? What sort of
language targets your audience? Give specific quotations. Think of use of slang, lexis, 3rd
versus 1st person, sense of community and ownership. Do uses of fonts, colour schemes and layouts
address your audience? How.
First of all before starting my magazine I did my own research on what
makes a magazine successful. So thus from my own exploration I followed the
route that makes your magazine stand out in the market and for the audience
representing the genre. All the feedbacks from all the comments reinforces that
BOLLY R magazine clearly signifies Bollywood music genre. I have tried to the
codes and conventions for a typical music magazine but also at the same time
tried to develop and challenge some of the elements, in order to present my
creativity and the uniqueness of my magazine.
The masthead: The
masthead is in pink and black which quickly attracts the audience especially
females. It short, snappy and easy to recognise. Big Bold masthead as the
colours are effective .But simple and it stands out a lot stands out a lot
because of its simplicity and font style. It’s placed front of the model
implying the magazine is more important; as well as the model it’s also other
cover lines that are momentous to read at the same time. The onomatopoeia/
metaphor connotes the style of font: brightness and diverse of Bollywood and
its music. Its stands out well in the neutral background. From an audience
perspective I would say you can almost feel the shine that it’s a Bollywood
music magazine. Both colours are equally use to symbolise that it can be male
for as well.
The cover lines
(main tag lines on the cover): The cover lines are short and creative/ almost
grasp your attention such as the big number 916 hooks the reader eye to the
magazine as its big and bold, as the font are posh stylish language; this links
to my target audience for higher class as higher class citizens associate
themselves art and different types of music. The number it is an art for the
musicians as it’s a special number. The other cover lines are placed in different
direction with a lot more space to stand out, this is effective and visible as
it saves a lot of space but yet is still very noticeable. There are cover lines
in the top right hand corner of the front cover which, like the main cover
line, keep the same colour consistency to make the writing recognisable and
make the viewer’s relate them colours to the. The main cover line has the
artist name more perceptible and outstanding than the other tag lines. The
anchorage text starts with a curious question about the model. The middle two
words are highlighted bold and bigger to make exemplify it’s the main strap
line. Its eye catching with the words being separated a bit. Plus the main
cover line is keeping a consistent house style with the colours of the words; pink
and black are the main as for the artist name to stand out black colour is used
as its eye catching especially the name of the artist can be recognised.
Puff/skylines: (give information about content in
the magazine) using this puff enables the audience to understand that it’s
aimed at female audience since it starts with an interesting teasers. And
reading this almost gives a feel of confidence that it must be something
important because it relates to our personal identity such as tips on how to
not care what people say about your choice of music, demonstrating that this is
something in which you should read it. The puff is the central identity of the
magazine, along with the masthead the puff gives clue which music genre the
magazine is going to be about. In addition the puff resembles with the main
cover line artist because both of the strong colour is pink, connotating that
she’s also one of them who are confident in changing their own world.
Main central image: From my peer review I have found
the same results that the model is the main attention of the magazine that
grabs audience attraction towards it especially when it’s a girl with a hijab,
following both old and modern trend that it doesn’t matter who the model or how
out exposed they are, its mainly the cover line story that hooks the audience.
Even if an audience buys it with a beautiful sexy musicians but the cover line
isn’t that interested later reading it, it will be a waste of money this could
put off people for not buying it next time. The costume is a simple pink dress
with black tights symbolizing that she’s a young girl, representing our type of
music and her choice as an individual. All the teasers aren’t squashed with the
model since in mainstream music magazine it’s all either squashed together/ the
model dominates the magazine by taking up the whole space/ few teasers not
recognizable. I infer by doing this technique, gives all the cover lines stand
out and easy to read at the same time. This makes it easier for the reader understanding
what the magazine is going to be about such as for new comers. However the strap line isn’t close or either
separated from the model since all the colours in the cover is same. The main
cover line font style is formal but I have made the artist name and the main
word “know” bigger, outstretching the idea with the image. There isn’t any
other images because this is where I have used the following codes and
convention: it’s better to keep one simple image to dominated and introduce the
magazine. Too much colours and images confuses the reader about the purpose of
the magazine. It creates a fascinating effect along with all the teasers, not
because of the colour but because I have used a simple neutral background to
keep the audience attract and to make everything stand out clearly reflecting
and reinforcing that it is a Bollywood music magazine. The artist positive
smile with glow in her face outlining that not it’s her time to shine and her
time to be famous. The image creates an atmosphere of peace, sensation feeling
of rhythm and the warmness associated with it.
Overall I
would say the main component that addressed my target audience is the model as
she’s Muslim musician and the fact that she’s a young singer with ambitious
hopes. The masthead also fills the atmosphere in the cover implying the
brightness of the Bollywood music magazine since it makes it easier to
understand the genre of the magazine. Everything is in same colour matching it
to outstand that it’s also for mature and higher class audience since it gives
a clue reading the teasers. The reason why I used the same colours everywhere
is because firstly my magazine is a Bollywood music magazine, secondly it’s
aimed at mature professional, qualified and lovers of music and thirdly it’s a
magazine where it opens the world of all types of Bollywood musicians ranging
from young to old. It’s more about music
but within the context of music. For example the first cover line is really
visible because of its boldness and the reason why I didn’t place the masthead
in the middle is because I want the audience to look at the model as I wanted
to make sure the along with the model the masthead should be attracted at the
same time.
In terms of
addressing my audience I infer that it’s better to stick with my own identity
of my magazine, meaning magazines such as mojo or Q have a lot of information in
their content page and that’s their brand identity reinforcing their identity
of their magazine. My magazine is simple yet effective especially addressing
the target audience. I have tried to maintain the codes and conventions but at
the same time made sure that the elements attract my audience such as the
masthead is the logo of my magazine and I have designed the font in the same
colour but with a different textual design like to show the formalness of the
magazine. Above as you can see a list of elements that I have used and I have
outlines the specific conventions that attracts my audience. For e.g. in my
final feedback the issues that have been put in my magazine are quite sensational
and the use font symbolizes as if its modern magazine aimed at higher class.
Certainly this is what I aimed for and my participants have almost agreed with
me. The main elements that kept the reader keen on reading the contents page is
the way the image has been laid out( the
layout), the use of fonts and the overall layout of my magazine. However one of
the disadvantages is that the date is hard to see but in the front cover the
date is highlighted big enough to see it.
·
The
elegant formal typography matches with the artist as with her serious look.
·
The
large I highlights her personality as an artist and what she thinks.
·
Pink
is extremely bold and signifies passion and confidence which connotes the
artist passion for her music and confidence towards her.
·
The heading is much more interesting, bigger,
eye catching signifying her loudness that she doesn’t care.
·
Drop
capital letter is used in the masthead only to symbolize who she is.
·
The
layout of the page is quite in a modernism and fashionable standard of having the main
images taking less space while having the text on the page to keep the
attention. This allows the large main image to attract the reader’s attention,
drawing them into reading the rest of the feature. The idea that i wanted to
emphasize here is that it’s a Bollywood music magazine not Q or billboard
magazine.
·
There’s pink and black with a touch of half
white and light grey background. The colour schemes help to keep up with the
novelty and sophistication sentiment along feminism.
·
Rather than having texts or too much images all
over it removes the purpose of the magazine as the magazine aims to provide the
knowledge and information that the target audience will want to know. Most
importantly remembering the audience the magazine aimed at, the layout of the
magazine should look like a professional magazine aiming towards middle and
higher class. Moreover the use of
colours does attract young audience as from my own research on colour
illustrates that pink and black is a famous modern colour attracting young adult and teens.
·
There are number of ways the ideology of BOLLY R
could be interpreted. Principally the ideology is to inform the readers about
the world of Bollywood music and what is happening around. It also endeavor to
promote and new artist or the current musicians in the mainstream Bollywood
industry. Reading the magazine it has been said that Bolly R aims to educate
its reader on music of times past such as the model in this cover is a young
artist who doesn’t care what people say about her but does care about her music
only not her appearance.
·
The article itself has used simple font in terms
of typography. I have used serif fonts to keep the authoritative
and powerful mood within the journalism. For the masthead decorative typeface
to keep the elegant and prestigious atmosphere.
·
Images are kept within the same distance bring it
closer. The images are simple and graceful as the intention of the article was
about how the artist struggled in her time. Additionally the images bring a
dramatic presence to the article creating an impression of authoritative and
strong emotion activating the feminine into the artist and into the female
audience. The connotation indicating the artist almost is seeking respect, appreciation and admiration
without asking the audience. This matches to my audience requirements as the
artist should an individual whom the audience can embrace.
·
There are more texts this is because it’s a
story about her life and presenting with too much colour distracts the
audience. It keeps it neat and professional.
·
Pull quotes indicate what the artist’s feels and
this type the font is different because I wanted to portray as if the artist
wrote it by herself, it gives an impression that it’s a quotes from diary.
Overall the I believe that the
codes and convention matches with the audience attraction such as the aspect of
mise-en-scene reflects the audience as the artists is dressed in a simple nice
way since middle class identity are
reflected through their simple stylish clothe. The grey neutral background
reveals her identity as young girl trying to make her music famous, indicating
she’s not from a famous background but from an ordinary girl trying to achieve
her dream regardless of what people say about her .In terms of journalism I
haven’t used any slags, I have used formal typography, keeping it plain and
maintaining the purpose of the magazine, who and what it’s about.
The technologies that I have used have benefited
me by making the overall layout of my magazine professionalism. Using
technologies such as indesign and Photoshop enabled me to enhance my ideas
further my ideas actually because doing a draft is different to doing it real.
It’s really creative as you can
even explore and combine the different steps in an action. Your knowledge and
skills will be sharpened with what you will discover. I have tried to look into
the steps and ways in creating it. This way, you will know which tool and
effect is used to give a good result.
After seeing your productivity, you’ll
feel like an expert for it will certainly look like the work of an expert. You
can amazingly come up with a work with combined techniques, tones and effects.
So, even if you are not really that good in photo manipulation, it will seem
like you really are with the magical touch of actions. This is what I felt by
using Photoshop and it certainly did enhance my skill further because in terms
of creativity I really good at it. However using indesign was a bit trouble for
me because from my perspective Photoshop enables and makes it easier for me to
construct my magazine. In indesign there’s too much editing you need to make
which waste your time for e.g. when constructing the content page I found it
difficult to place the writings together and create more peace. But at the end
I learned properly on how to use it properly and it have a good outcome
especially for my double page spread giving the look I want from it. Indesign in terms of handling long passages,
multiple pages, subtle manipulation, alternate characters, large sizes,
Open-Type fonts, drop caps etc. Such as you have
more control over the text and adding. Hence when writing in my double page
spread it made easier for me write up neatly. Indesign helped me to expand my
skills in developing the style of my writing since it gave the idea of how and
what font create certain affects. I
would use Indesign in future if I had to layout a book since it saves an hours
of time. Furthermore when I was in the studio DSLR camera creates an amazing
effect especially for a simple beautiful photo. By shooting
in RAW mode the camera captures more detail, and allows for far more
flexibility when it comes to editing photos later on. Digital SLR cameras are usually good
at taking a sequence of photos of a moving subject; and will be able to keep
re-focussing as the subject moves too. Have a look at the photo below to see
the effect. You can capture a moment in
the photo. The pictures at the end came really good and it gave me the chance
to edit it more effectively.
I
wasn’t shooting since I was the model; my assistant loved it when she was
taking pictures of me. Because it gave her less stress and she said that now
she feels like a good photographer. From her experience it increased her
photography skills but it was new skills for her learn. In addition when doing
my pitch presentation I decided that prezi is a better technology. This is
because Prezi’s unique slick
“zooming” function offers an increasingly popular alternative to the
traditional PowerPoint presentations. Prezi is an online, Flash-based
presentation creator who shares similar functionalities with other information
presentation programmes such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Apple Keynotes. It is
a visual learning tool which allows you to create maps of texts, images,
videos, graphics etc. Prezi creates stunning visual impact. Import
pictures, maps and PDFs and use them as a canvas. With the cinematic experience
of the zooming function, I felt like I’m transported into a “world” that I have
designed myself. With prezi it increases your creativity and thinking.
Therefore I believe prezi has made my creative skills boost further. Unfortunately
its only limited in using more tools and options you have spent money on it.
However prezi enabled me to express my creativity and stretched my thinking
outside the box. Before starting our work we uses time toast to outline what we
are going to do and time toast is where you can keep up to date what you need
to do. Time toast is a great technology to keep track of your work; it creates
a timeline event for you. As a result by using time toast has improved my time
management but however due to the pressure of work I don’t really open my
account every day and therefore because of the time rush it created a little
bit problem for me because in my content page and double page spread I have
forgotten to put the dates in. But right after that day i started to use time
toast again which gave me a better result of my time. So therefore time toast
for me improved my time management.
Finally when deciding the
most favourite technology i have chosen the blogger; it’s free and offers
anyone the ability to manage their own blog without the burden of
technicalities. It encouraged me to be active throughout the whole journey. It
captures changes in thinking and motivating on your ideas as well as it invites
people tom collaborate such as it made it more easy for my audience to give me
feedback since its available to anyone who wants to comment on it. Plus
blogging makes the whole process of constructing the magazine more formal as i
got to feel that I’m the control of the blogger. Plus it’s cost effective, in
timing and so on. On the other hand before doing photography i did my extra
research on what are the types of effect in a DSLR camera, learned more the shutter,
exposure, the layering, motions, the ways of taking the picture etc. So I would
say my research came in handy for me as i was able to demonstrate to my
assistance on how to use it properly and what are the ways I wanted her to take
the pictures. To conclude I have enjoyed using all the technologies and it
indeed improved my skills such as timing, creativity and I did also learned
some new skills such as being more careful when editing the images and colour
skills.
Looking back at the
preliminary task I
feel I have learned quite a lot in the progression from it to the full product.
I have defiantly improved and meet my action points but you can’t be always
perfect at everything as I have bit minor issues but it benefitted me a lot. In
my college magazine the overall feedback wasn’t as good and from my point of
view I didn’t liked the layout of the magazine. I was confused on how to create
it since it was a college magazine. But with this small error it gave a greater
outlook of my final music magazine. For e. g. The front cover to me didn’t
reflect that it was a college magazine but the music magazine of my cover looks
like a proper Bollywood music magazine. In terms of implying where I have
learned something new or not I would say I’m already experienced in using
Photoshop and for the first time I have actually liked using indesign because
it gave a good layout of my content page and my double page spread. I have used
indesign for college contents page and I didn’t like not because I found it
hard but I haven’t used it in my own inventive way. So therefore one thing that
addressed the action points I made was being more imaginative, unique and
artistic when designing it. Another action point was on time management issue
which I did address but due to the pressure of the work and designing my ideas
took my most of the time. But I did improve on it such as I tried to meet every
deadline of all the tasks. In referring back to task for I infer this time my
improvements and my extra research has increased my productivity of my work in
a further better way. When looking at my magazine my audience addresses my
magazine as unique and professional magazine. It made me do more research on it
and therefore it has benefited this time meeting the action points that I set
for myself. In addition I have learned a lot as I said about music magazine,
its institutions, and the fascinating world of music especially on BOLLYWOOD
music. I have really enjoyed doing my magazine and it’s a great way to learn
and get involve more about the world of music magazine.
What
technique will I use to answer each of my question?
Well
I will use prezi, slideshare, powtoon, mindmester and powerpoint. For Q1 and 6 I would use slideshare as I have lot of information
which will break it for me more easily, using slideshare creates more of an
creative way to understand and answering the questions. For Q7 and 3 prezi
will me much better in presenting this is because since there less writing I
also want to add a bit of inventiveness in my writing and slideshare enables me
to break it, as it allows everyone to see I can also add external feedback,
it’s an simple presentation technology making it engaging with the audience at
the same, it makes it more entertaining and different way to interpretate the
presentation. Q5 is powtoon
as I want to make it visually interesting for the interesting, since this is
along question answer, using powtoon will keep the audience hooked to
presentation, such as powtoon has an audio speaker to make sure the audience
are being attracted towards the powtoon. With
Q2 I would use prezi in terms of representing the data’s and charts
information i will try to use it in a different way this is because prezi can make it simpler to undertsand for the audience and Q4 I would use mindmeister this is because rather than doing a presentaion or with images it will confuse my audience, I decided its better to imply my answer through a poster to make it look like a set of answers that it is exciting to read.
